Supreme Court Expresses Displeasure Over Bail Plea Delays in High Courts

The Supreme Court has expressed strong disappointment over the long delays in deciding bail and anticipatory bail applications across several High Courts.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, along with Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul Pancholi, was hearing Sunny Chauhan vs State of Haryana when it noted that numerous bail pleas remain pending for months—despite being matters directly tied to personal liberty.

The Court emphasized that bail applications must be treated with urgency and cannot be left languishing. It expressed disappointment at the lax approach of certain High Courts in handling such sensitive matters, stressing that unnecessary delays undermine the fundamental right to freedom.

This reminder from the apex court underscores the pressing need for better case management and prioritization of bail matters. Timely decisions are not just procedural requirements—they are essential safeguards of individual liberty
